ActivateNM Internship

ActivateNM interns are ready, willing, and able to bring value to the program as all-around team players assisting the program staff and individual teams as needed.

What are the attributes of a great Intern?

  • Brings positive energy and can-do attitude. ActivateNM program staff and companies work on hard problems at a fast pace. You’ll help keep spirits up and minds engaged throughout the process by taking on administrative tasks, running errands, and having a fun, positive attitude throughout.
  • Identifies work opportunities. You’ll help the companies you work with identify things you could be doing that will help them to focus on things only they can do well.
  • Organizes and communicates effectively. During customer discovery meetings, team meetings, and in the hallway, you’ll help track tasks that companies need to be doing and help them follow up and meet deadlines. You'll play an important role in helping teams stay on top of their key growth milestones.

What is the commitment of an Intern?

Interns commit to:

  • Attend a Mixer event in early October 2018 to meet companies and start to identify where they can plug in as the program gets started
  • Attend weekly cohort lunches, taking notes for specific companies as requested
  • Attend weekly program meetings with the Program Director to identify and report on tasks needing to get done for the program and for specific companies
  • Get involved with specific companies and add value to them, first just by shadowing and as time goes on, pitching in as they work towards milestones
  • Be responsive to tasks needing to get done or inbound requests that come in over the eight week period. You will set expectations with the Program Director and the companies you may work with about your weekly availability
  • Not try to get paid work from companies during the program
  • Listen, learn, and be on hand to add value when it’s appropriate.

During an eight-week cycle you might:

  • Order food for sessions
  • Set up and break down chairs for the sessions
  • Keep the coworking area generally straight and organized
  • Shop for sodas, paper products, and other items
  • Film and upload all mentor sessions
  • Film and upload all pitch practices, then share them with the founders so they can watch themselves
  • Run various errands
  • Hang out in company meetings and take notes

What do Interns receive in return?

  • Experience in NM's entrepreneurial ecosystem and lots of networking opportunities! There’s no better business coach than being involved in a real business, and there’s no better way to put yourself out there than by jumping in feet first and being involved in the journey of multiple high-quality companies.
  • Recognition on the ABQid website and social media before and during the program
  • Recognition from the stage during Demo Day after the 8-week curriculum phase
  • Free admission to ABQid events including Balloon Pitch and Ski Lift Pitch
  • The knowledge that you made a difference in a company’s life and are helping grow the entrepreneur-led economic development movement in New Mexico

ActivateNM Team Mentors

ActivateNM, powered by ABQid and WESST, seeks mentors for the 2018 pilot cohort. ActivateNM blends an 8-week curriculum, ongoing incubation, rigorous Lean Startup training, and mentorship to accelerate early-stage New Mexico businesses towards key growth milestones.

What is the Role of a Team Mentor?

Team Mentors are experienced entrepreneurs who believe in the Lean Startup approach to building high-growth companies. They want to help build successful NM businesses and are willing to commit their time to the cause by pairing up with one ActivateNM team for 8 weeks.

Team Mentors are expected to bring positive energy and support to their teams; force focus and accountability; tell the truth to their teams even when it's difficult; and share from their experiences to help their team access the knowledge and resources they need to be successful. Team Mentors also spur action among company founders by helping them interpret lessons learned through the program into focused activities for their company. In essence, Team Mentors are an integral part of ActivateNM.

Team mentors agree to:

  • Attend a Mentor Mixer event in early October to meet companies and be paired with your best match.
  • Attend weekly cohort lunches alongside your company.
  • Set and abide by a regular communications cadence with your company. On average, this will take up to 3-hours a week and we recommend daily communication.
  • Be responsive to advice-seeking by your company. You also agree to set expectations with your company about when you will and will not be available during a regular week.
  • Not solicit renumeration or business of any kind from your company (or any company in the cohort) during the 8-week curriculum period.

What do Team Mentor's receive in return?

  • Recognition on the ABQid website and social media before and during the program
  • Recognition from the stage during Demo Day after the 8-week curriculum phase
  • Free admission to ABQid events including Balloon Pitch and Ski Lift Pitch
  • And most of all, the knowledge that you made a difference in a company’s life and are helping grow the entrepreneur-led economic development movement in New Mexico!
